INTRODUCTION
With increasing accountability standards and assessment instruments responsibility for AYP for English Language Learners (ELLs) is shifting more and more to the regular classroom teacher in all subjects. The World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Consortium developed English language proficiency standards and an English language proficiency test aligned with those standards (ACCESS for ELLs®). The WIDA Consortium consists of fourteen partner states including Alabama. WIDA framework and standards as well as the instrument for content-based assessment of ELLs, the ACCESS test, have been adopted by Alabama. Since these accountability measures are content-based, it is not just English proficiency that is being assessed but content-area knowledge; for example, that reflected in science literacy development. The materials you find here include the science content standards for the WIDA framework and the rubrics used in addition to a brief discussion of what these mean for AYP and the teaching of ELLs by regular classroom teachers.
